According to Polish composer and vocalist Agata Zubel, Vilnius is a city with a distinct identity where both its history and modernity are revealed and preserved. To emphasize this connection, the composer has created a performative piece for flute and kanklės (a Lithuanian plucked string instrument) called “CONNECT 2”. Different musical parts will be performed simultaneously in different spaces in Vilnius – the Gediminas Castle Tower and the “K29” business center. Audience members will have the opportunity to visit both locations at their chosen time, and the auditory experience will be complemented by informative tours.
By building a musical bridge between the most prominent symbol of the capital and one of the region’s most modern business centers, the composer enhances the intrigue by choosing an unconventional format for the piece: centuries of history or multifaceted contemporary contexts condensed into a few significant musical minutes. The intimate relationship with the composition is created by the flute playing for an individual listener in an elevator or a small group listening to the sounds of kanklės recounting memories in the tower.

It’s important not to lose touch with the past if we want to keep our identity, and music also contributes to that. I felt that Vilnius is a very strong city with a clear identity.
Agata Zubel is composer and vocalist. Known for her unique vocal range and the use of techniques that challenge stereotypes.
Zubel gives concerts throughout the world and has premiered numerous new works. As a singer and composer, Agata Zubel has collaborated with several dozen festivals and philharmonic companies, operas as well as the world’s leading ensembles, such as: Los Angeles Philharmonic, Seattle Symphony, Staatsoper Hannover, SWR Radio, Deutschlandfunk, Westdeutscher Rundfunk, The Grand Theatre – National Opera in Warsaw, Klangforum Wien, MusikFabrik, Inter- Contemporain, London Sinfonietta, Ictus, Eighth Blackbird, Seattle Chamber Players, San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, Münchener Kammerorchester, Neue Vocalsolisten, Remix Ensemble.
Winner of several competitions, both as singer and composer, she also boasts such important accolades as the “Passport” Award of the “Polityka” weekly for classical music (2005), “Fryderyk” Award for Cascando – a CD programme of her own compositions (2010) and Vocal Recital Apparition (2020), selected work (the grand prix) of the 60th UNESCO International Rostrum of Composers for the piece Not I (2013), the “Polonica Nova” Prize (2014), Coryphaeus of Polish Music (2016) , European Composer Award (2018), Erste Bank Kompositionspreis (2018), and the “Badge of Merit to Polish Culture” as well as Medal “Gloria Artis”.
She lives in Wroclaw where she teaches in University of Music. Together with the composer and pianist Cezary Duchnowski, she established the ElettroVoce Duo.
Her discography consists of more than a dozen titles, including albums dedicated to her own music – Cascando (CD Accord), Not I and Cleopatra’s Songs (KAIROS), Bildbeschreibung (Anaklasis), and, as well as her vocal interpretations of songs by Copland, Berg and Szymański (Poems), El-Derwid. Blots on the Sun, Dream Lake, respectively with song cycles by Witold Lutosławski and André Tchaikowsky and the most recent Apparition with songs of Ravel, Barber, Szymanowski, Crumb and Obradors (CD Accord).
A piece is written for Vilnius City and intended to be performed in specific locations. Two musicians play separately at two different venues in the city. On the occasion of the celebration of the 700th anniversary, the idea of “connecting” a very old (The Gediminas Tower) and a very new part of the city (Business Center K29) was born. In both places, the music is to be performed only for one listener – for each one changing one of the four parts of the piece.
Everyone lives their lives individually, but in the context of what came before and, inevitably, what comes after. And although this personal existence is personalized for everyone as much as he takes care of it, we discover these contexts all our lives, we look for companionship, support and we are curious about interaction.
Each time of this individual experience is both short and long at the same time, whether we focus on 700 years or 7 minutes. The key to the effective use of this time remains our sensitivity and ability to observe. Even when we are not aware of them because they result from events taking place elsewhere.
The old part of the city (the past) is represented by the national Lithuanian instrument – Kanklės, which is played in a separate room in the Tower. The new part (contemporary) is represented by the Piccolo Flute, which is to be played in the elevator of the Business Center. Only one listener at a time is in the elevator with the Flute, and only one listener is in the room with Kanklės.
GEDIMINAS CASTLE TOWER
K29 BUSINESS CENTER
The composition by Agata Zubel connects the old and the new Vilnius. So why she selected two diferent places. One of them reveals the oldest history of the city, another one links to the present city.
Gedimino kalnas – tai vieta, kur prasidėjo Vilniaus istorija. Čia kūrėsi būsimo miesto gyventojai. XI a. stovėjo pirmoji medinė pilis, o XIV a. iškilo mūriniai kunigaikščių rūmai.
Pilies atvaizdų neturime, tad istorikai tik apytikriai įsivaizduoja, kaip ji atrodė. Jos paskirtis buvo dvejopa – gynybinė ir reprezentacinė. Rūmai tikriausiai buvo triaukščiai. Galingomis 4–5 metrų storio išorinėmis sienomis. Su reprezentacine mene, gyvenamaisiais kambariais, sandėliais, virtuve ir kitomis ūkinėmis patalpomis.
Vilniaus Aukštutinę pilį saugojo gynybinė siena, jungianti tris bokštus. Joje buvo iškirstos šaudymo angos. Pilies kalnu mūrinė siena leidosi iki apačios, kur jungėsi prie papėdėje stovėjusio bokšto. Šiaurinis bokštas buvo iš mūro, mažesnis nei kiti bokštai.
Pietinis bokštas – vienintelis išlikęs iki šių dienų – buvo keturių aukštų su arkiniais langais, bokšto apačia kvadratinė. Pritaikytas apsiginti nuo šaunamojo ginklo; jame buvę ir gyvenama. Bokštas vienintelis taip gerai išlikęs gotikinės gynybinės architektūros statinys Lietuvoje.
XVII a. pilis buvo apleista. Ilgą laiką stovėjęs nenaudojamas, bokštas iro, jo sienos skilo, XIX a. pradžioje ketvirtas aukštas buvo jau visai sugriuvęs. Rusijos imperijos okupacijos laikais Aukštutinėje pilyje įrengus karinę tvirtovę, 1832–1834 metais du viršutiniai bokšto aukštai buvo nuardyti, ant likusių dviejų pastatytas medinis šešiakampio plano statinys ir įrengtas optinis telegrafas.
Bokštas buvo ne kartą remontuojamas, jo pamatai stiprinami, o 1895 metais jame atsirado priešgaisrinės miesto apsaugos postas. Pilies kalno šlaite buvo nutiestas naujas kelias, kalno šlaitai apsodinti medžiais, vakariniame bokšte įrengta tuo metu populiaria tapusi kavinė.
1919 metų sausio 1 dieną pirmą kartą Gedimino pilies bokšte buvo iškelta Lietuvos vėliava, būtent todėl kasmet tądien ir minime Lietuvos vėliavos dieną. Bokšto istoriniais tyrimais ir apsauga susirūpinta po 1920 metų, kai, išvalius griuvenas iš jo vidaus, pagaliau buvo pašalintas medinis antstatas. Prasidėjęs Antrasis pasaulinis karas sužlugdė užmojus bokšte atidaryti muziejų. Po miesto bombardavimų bokštas buvo apgriautas, bet po karo greitai atstatytas. Čia įkurtas muziejus duris lankytojams atvėrė 1960 metais. Nuo to laiko tai yra vienas lankomiausių paveldo objektų Lietuvoje.
„K29“, pirmasis Lietuvoje atrijaus tipo pastatas, yra 6–8 aukštų, daugiau nei 15 tūkst. kv. m. ploto. Pastate įrengtos 1 253 modernios darbo vietos. Vystant projektą, į miesto infrastruktūrą buvo investuota daugiau nei 1,1 mln. Eur.
Verslo centro idėjos autoriai – architektūrinį konkursą laimėjusi jungtinė Lietuvos architektų studijos „Archinova“ ir Danijos „PLH Arkitekter“ komanda. Projektą vystė investicijų bendrovė „Lords LB Asset Management“. „K29“ pirmasis Baltijos šalyse gavo darnumo su aplinka įvertinimą – jam suteiktas „Excellent“ „BREEAM In-Use“ sertifikatas pagal 130 kriterijų. Pelnytai šį biurų pastatą galima vadinti geriausiu regione.

Initiated by Vykintas Baltakas, LENsemble Vilnius (Lithuanian Ensemble Network) connects professional ensembles, soloists and conductors.
LENsemble consists of: the Chordos String Quartet, Kristupas Wind Quintet, Kaskados Piano Trio, Vilnius Brass Quintet, accordionist Raimondas Sviackevičius and others. LENsemble is working with established institutions of contemporary music in Lithuania and abroad, such as the Lithuanian Composers’ Union, Lithuanian Music Information and Publishing Centre, Lithuanian Academy of Music and theatre, Goethe-Institut Vilnius and Karsten Witt Musikmanagement Berlin.
LEN is proud about its performances at the WDR (2009), at the Ruhr European Capital of Culture (2010), Ultraschall Festival Berlin (2013), Gaida Festival, Flagey Brussels, Concertgebouw Brugge, tours in Serbia, Egypt, Poland, Latvia and its recordings for Kairos, Megadisc Classics, WDR, Deutschland Radio Kultur, WDR, etc. In 2011 LENsemble started the concert series Composers of our time, featuring the influential international and lithuanian composers.
